During week one of our product development progress, our goal was to make the decisions needed to kick start the process. We, first, had to make the decision on what type of customers we were trying to target and what market we would launch our products in. We decided we would target the busy college kids or the new mom of 3 who needed a quick meal to feed her family. Our next question was: “Should our products show up at a fast food chain or on the shelf at a grocery store?” We determined our product should be in grocery stores, and should be advertised for convenience. We, then, came up with three new product ideas for our group to discuss and develop. We knew that we would only have access to wooden breasts, so we decided we should produce recipes that would have ground chicken or thinly sliced small pieces of chicken. Our three ideas were a chicken jerky recipe, a ready-to-eat casserole, and a chicken and waffle nugget. All three of these recipes also have other products in them that will help to take away from the fact that the chicken used is from a tough, wooden fillet. Our next step was to come up with an ingredient list for all of our recipes so that we can have them purchased for week two. Then, we took on the task of coming up with a company name for our group. This proved to be the hardest item on the to-do list for week one. We had to be super careful to make sure we weren’t crossing copyright lines, and that our company name would help us target the customers we wanted to produce these products for. All of our recipes come from southern “soul” comfort food, so we decided to call our company Southern Grub. We set up our kitchen time for week two to begin the production of our products. Week two most likely holds some of the hardest challenges that we will face during our product development project. However, we are super excited and eager to get started and see how our ideas play out in the kitchen.
